Popular Birding Sites on The Island of O`ahu

Directions to Sites

    (Wetland Birds)

  1. James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge
    Take Kamehameha Highway (83) North to Kahuku Town; proceed North about 1mile to bridge, turn right past Refuge sign, Sewage Treatment Plant to locked gate. Refuge closed to visitors mid-February to October due to nesting. Call the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at (808) 637-6330 for guidance.
     
  2. Kahuku Aquaculture Ponds
    Follow directions to James Campbell National Wildlife Refuge (above), but proceed North past the Refuge access road. Ponds are along the right side of Highway 83 for about 1mile.
     
  3. Pearl Harbor National Wildlife Refuge
    Access is restricted. Call the U.S. Fishand Wildlife office at (808) 637-6330 for guidance. The Waiawa Unit is reached through Pearl City on Farrington Highway (93) and is located below Leeward Community College. The Honouliuli Unit is reached from Fort Weaver Road (76) (Hamana Street).
     
  4. Kawai Nui Marsh/Hamakua Wetlands
    Take H-3 East to the windward side, right on Mokapu Saddle Road, right on Oneawa Street, right on Kaha Street, straight ahead to the Kawai Nui Neighborhood Park. OR take Pali highway (61) East to Kalanianiole Highway (61) to Kailua Road (Kawai Nui on left)to entrance to Kailua Town, right on Hamakua Drive; the Hamakua Wetlands are on the right.
     
  5. Enchanted Lakes (Kailua) (KaŒelepulu)
    Follow directions to Hamakua Wetlands (above); follow Hamakua Drive to Keolu Drive, turn right, take first left on to Kiukee Street. The Kaelepulu Wetland Sanctuary is on the left. (privateland)
     
  6. Lokoea Pond (Haleiwa)
    Take Highway H-2 North to Wahiawa Town, proceed North on Highways 80,99 and 83 through Haleiwa Town over bridge to Haleiwa Beach Park. Pond is adjacent to Jamesons restaurant.
     
  7. Salt Lake District Park
    Take Salt Lake Boulevard to Ala Napunani, then left on Ala Puumalu to Honolulu Country Club clubhouse. Wetland is on the right.
