Directions to Sites
(Open Country Birds)
- Saddle Road
From Hilo, take Saddle Road (200) West to junction with Mamalahoa Highway
(190). From Kailua-Kona, take Palani Road and Mamalahoa Highway North to
junction, turn right and proceed East.
- Waimea
From Hilo, take Saddle Road (200) West to junction with Mamalahoa Highway
(190), bear right and North past Waimea-Kohala Airport on right to Waimea
(Kamuela) Town. From Kailua-Kona, take Palani Road North to Mamalahoa
Highway; continue north to Waimea.
- Pu`u Anahulu
From Hilo, take Saddle Road (200) West to junction with Mamalahoa Highway
(190), turn left and South about 16 miles past Big Island Country Club
(golf course) and Pu`u Lani Ranch down Pu`u Anahulu escarpment. Entrance
road to Pu`u Wa`awa`a Ranch is on the left just past the bend in the road. From
Kailua- Kona, take Palani Road North to the Mamalahoa Highway and proceed
about 12 miles North and East to the entrance to Pu`u Wa`awa`a Ranch on the
right. The Pu`uanhulu escarpment is a short distance beyond.
- Kailua-Kona to Waimea
From Kailua-Kona, take Palani Road North to Mamalahoa Highway (190) and
continue North to Waimea (37 miles).
- Volcano Golf Course
Near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (HVNP). Inquire at headquarters for
directions to golf course. To get to HVNP from Hilo, take Kanoelehua Avenue
South connecting to the Hawaii Belt Road (11) 28 miles South and West to HVNP
headquarters. From Kailua-Kona, either proceed to Hilo over the Saddle Road
(Highway 190 North, 200 East) and then to HVNP (111 miles); or take the Hawaii
Belt Road (11), South and East past Kealekekua, Miloli`i and Na`alehu to the
HVNP headquarters (92 miles).
- South Point Road
In Hilo, take Kanoelehua Avenue South connecting to the Hawaii Belt Road (11)
West past Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, past Pahala to Na`alehu Town
(about 80 miles). Continue to Waiohinu and take either Kamaoa Road (past
Mark Twain Estates and Discover Harbour) or South Point Road South to the point
(about 12 miles). From Kailua-Kona take the Hawaii Belt Road (11) South
past Kealekekua, Miloli`i and Ocean View Estates to Waiohinu and South
Point (about 65 miles).
