Popular Birding Sites on The Island of O`ahu

Directions to Sites

    (Marine Birds)

  1. Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kane`ohe Bay
    Take H-3 East to end of freeway (crosses Kane`ohe Bay Drive); enter base, check in at Security Station and show drivers license, car registration, proof of insurance (plus rental agreement if car is rented). Access may be restricted. (Phone: (808) 449-7110, Base Locator).
     
  2. Koko Head Regional Park and Nature Preserve
    Take H-1 East to Kalanianiole Highway (72) to Koko Head, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (closed on Tuesdays), Koko Crater, Halona Blowhole and Sandy Beach Park.
     
  3. Manana Island
    Take Highway 72 (North) or Highway 83 (South) to Waimanalo, to Makapu`u Beach Park, across from Sea Life Park for viewing from afar. Contact the State Division of Forestry and Wildlife (808-587-0166) for information on access to the island.
     
  4. Sand Island Park (Sand Island State Recreation Area)
    Take H-1 (East or West) to Nimitz Highway (92), Honolulu, to Sand Island Parkway; drive to end of road.
     
  5. La`ie Point
    Take Kamehameha Highway (83) North to La`ie Shopping Center, turn towards the ocean on Onemoku Street, then right on Naupaka Street to the end of the peninsula.
     
  6. Ka`ena Point Natural Area Reserve
    Follow Farrington Highway (930) West to the end where it becomes a dirt road; park on the right. Walk around the gate, follow dirt road. Stay on trails (no dogs allowed).
