Popular Birding Sites on The Island of O`ahu

Directions to Sites

    (Forest Birds)

  1. `Aiea Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area (`Aiea Loop Trail)
    Take H-1 to Stadium Halawa Exit. Go straight through light on Ulune Street. Turn right on `Aiea Heights Drive and proceed Mauka to Keaiwa Heiau State Recreation Area. Trail starts upslope from the park.
     
  2. Tantalus, Manoa Cliffs Trail (Pu`u `Ohia Trail)
    From Makiki Street, proceed mauka on Round Top Drive and park in lot by the Moleka trailhead, near street #s 4005 and 4009. Manoa Cliff Trail is on opposite side of road. At first junction, turn left onto Pu`u `Ohi`a Trail. The crest of the trail encounters a telephone service road. Proceed makai on this road, pass the buildings, and rejoin the trail. Trail ends on Tantalus Drive.
    NOTE: A detailed map of the Honolulu Trail system is available at the State Division of Forestry and Wildlife office (Room 325) at ll51 Punchbowl Street in Honolulu.
     
  3. Kuli`ou`ou Valley/Ridge Trail
    From Kalaniana`ole Highway (72) proceed mauka on `Elelupe Road. After the right bend turn left on Kuli`ou`ou Road, then right on Kala`au Place. Park before the cul-de-sac. Pass a cable barrier by the Board of Water Supply sign, bear left, then right onto a grassy path past a hunter check-in station. About 0.2 mile up the Kuli`ou`ou Valley Trail look for a sign on the right pointing up the ridge.
     
  4. Hawai`i Loa Ridge Trail
    From Kalanianiole Highway (72) proceed mauka on Pu`u Ikena Drive. Sign waiver at guard shack. From Ikena Circle, enter Paka Nahele and park in spaces by water tank. Follow gravel path to right; the trailhead is to the left of the path.
     
  5. Harold Lyon Arboretum
    End of Manoa Road, Manoa Valley, past Manoa Falls trailhead. Check in at visitor center which has trail maps.
